Meet Dr. John

Dr. John S. Hutton is a pediatrician and researcher at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Reading and Literacy Discovery Center, author, and owner of the award-winning blue manatee children’s bookstore and affiliate e-commerce site, blue manatee boxes.  His research involves the application of cutting-edge neuroimaging techniques to better understand the influence of home cognitive and reading environment (including screen-based format) on early brain development. He lives with his wife and children in the suburban wilderness, where they are fond of planting things and gawking at butterflies, toads, and birds.  As a child, he was known to play in his backyard for hours amidst mud, fireflies, and other analog kids (see archival photo below).   As a grownup, Dr. John’s clinical, research and advocacy passions involve the effects of electronic media on young children, and reading and play as healthy alternatives.  He is also a passionate champion of the many benefits of shared reading with young children, including emotional, social, and cognitive development.

For digital grownups: a nifty interview describing Dr. John’s inspiration for the Baby Unplugged books and their mission, via the Tell Me A Story project from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.

This too: a landmark study led by Dr. John and published in Pediatrics and widely featured in the popular press, the first to show a direct effect of early home reading environment and brain function supporting emergent literacy in preschoolers.

You can read about the evolution of the Baby Unplugged initiative and the science behind it in this 2013 article in Clinical Pediatrics.

Dr. John speaks regularly to medical, educator, and parent groups, and has been a guest blogger/commentator in multiple venues.  To inquire about appearances or interviews, send queries to press[at]

  4. Dr. John,
It is so encouraging to find someone else who is passionate about reading to+with children! You really understand the babies! Thank you for that!

Being a grandma (actually “Naana” x 4) gives me a unique “perspective” to the kid’s and grandkid’s responses when reading for them. I myself am in a process of having a book, drawn+written by myself, to be published by CreateSpace. It is called Kiddey Toons.

Kiddey Toons is for the next age group up from your audience. Hope to have it published this spring, yet. I would really like to have your feed back/comment when it is ready.

Having grown up in a different country and culture plus different era, the book also is different in flavor. Hopefully interesting +educational
for the 3-6 year olds + their adults.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
