I commend you for all of the content of this post!!! Our moms and grandmothers talked to their babies without thinking! Can you imagine that they had no worries about their children's speech and language development? They just behaved in a natural, conversational manner with their offspring. Thank you for your very comprehensive piece on this very important subject!

Just tweeted this post! I am in COMPLETE agreement with you! My background is in Language Development, Early Intervention, and Technology. Yes, OUTSOURCE ourselves. That is what is happening when babies and 3-5 year olds are spending more and more time in front of screens. "Parenting is far too important, complex, rewarding, powerful, and fun to ever be outsourced to a device, no matter how 'educational' it claims to be. We must embrace and defend our hard-won, evolutionary status as teacher- and soother-in-chief and put technology in its proper place, especially during those first three, habit-forming years." Very well said! Brava!!!

Thank you so much for this thoughtful comment! I grew up in Lexington, KY, and some of my earliest memories are of going with my mom to our local children's bookstore to pick out a new book to read: Leo Lionni, Dr. Seuss, Richard Scarry... I think those book sharing experiences must have rooted deeply! Drop by when you're in town, as it would be great to say hello. Thanks again and all best!

Dr. John, I am thrilled to have discovered your blog, as well as information
about Blue Manatee. I am a retired school speech therapist with a brand
new grandson, worrying..despairing over the "electronic" direction early
childhood education is taking. A favorite destination over the years, The
White Rabbit bookstore in La Jolla, Ca. is gone... I'm heading to Cincinnati
on my way to visit my grandson in Washington, D.C.! Politics and Prose
has a good children's area, but it's not a dedicated children's bookstore.
Best of luck in your endeavors...WRITE A BOOK SOON, American parents
need to hear your message. I have read UCLA psychiatrist, Dr. Gary Small's book iBrain. It is terrifying to consider the path upon which human development seems to be heading.

Dr. John,
It is so encouraging to find someone else who is passionate about reading to+with children! You really understand the babies! Thank you for that!

Being a grandma (actually "Naana" x 4) gives me a unique "perspective" to the kid's and grandkid's responses when reading for them. I myself am in a process of having a book, drawn+written by myself, to be published by CreateSpace. It is called Kiddey Toons.

Kiddey Toons is for the next age group up from your audience. Hope to have it published this spring, yet. I would really like to have your feed back/comment when it is ready.

Having grown up in a different country and culture plus different era, the book also is different in flavor. Hopefully interesting +educational
for the 3-6 year olds + their adults.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thank you for trying! The pace of change can be dizzying, making shiny gadgets hard to resist, but it's worth it in the early years!

Thanks for sharing this information. It is so important that parents and educators recognize the critical importance of free movement and exploration. Each hour of electronics robs the child of opportunities for brain development. How this occurs during motor play is explained in Your Child's Motor Development Story.
